Preserving Heritage

Antique biblical stone sets the tone the moment the doors open. In the double height entrance hall the flagstones run wide and irregular, their patina catching the light beneath carved wood doors. A reading nook off the hall carries a carved black marble mantel above a herringbone firebox, framed by paneled wood and shelves of books. The flooring continues outdoors to a loggia, where stone framed arches open onto the garden and a table is set for lunch on limestone paving. A second doorway is framed in carved limestone, its arch set into warm stucco above a limestone threshold. In the kitchen the same stone returns in a second format, a wall of limestone brick laid in running bond from the countertops to the ceiling, its small rough faced units wrapping the niche beside the range. Pale stone counters run below it, under a wood range hood carved by hand with acanthus scrollwork.
